Purrsday: little Scottparker

The backstory of Scottparker
We adopted Scottparker – excuse me, he adopted us – on the 20th of December, 2014. The Etruscan and I had been arguing ALL morning about something so trivial that I couldn’t tell you what it was now. It was escalating to heightened gesticulating (Italy, you know) and halfway through we both ran out of steam and he suggested we take a walk to cool off.

Under the bridge in our town is where generations of street cats hang out, and our Scott-to-be was among them, tucked up under the bridge, bunched up in the cold. We said hello – normally these guys run away if you get too close but his little dunny brush tail shot up and he rushed over to claim his property.

He came with us on the rest of our walk into the valley and then followed us all the way up into our apartment.

He reminded me of a tadpole in the latter stages of transmutation; much of the fur on his legs had worn away from sleeping on hard surfaces in the cold, and he was skinny with a pot belly. And boy did the fleas have a party.

A proportion of the cats here suffer feline leukaemia and/or FIV, but we had him tested and luckily he was clear.

This is him 10 days into the adoption. I’d worked till 6am and had to get up again at 9 to collect family from the airport. I think falling asleep to the rumble of a purr has to be one of the best things in life.
