At last my scripts will be produced by ABC

Last year our Writing for Sound class was priveleged enough to obtain a little government funding to write scripts pertaining to the theme of water in the Illawarra. We were asked to create a five minute piece and a twenty minute piece, which would be considered for production for ABC Radio National’s Airplay. I wrote two scripts based on The Lorelei myth and integrated it with an interview with my German Nanna, Hedwig Kosij, who discussed The Lorelei myth and gave an account of her postwar migration to Australia. Out of this documentary material I was able to ‘weave’ two scripts.
Unfortunately the funding hadn’t covered the use of actors and we had to wait until the following financial year, but now it’s all coming together. And they want BOTH scripts, which is just wonderful!
What makes it all the more satisfying, and indeed what is the most important aspect of the entire process is the poignancy of the documentary material. I only wish I’d recorded more. Four weeks after my interview with her, Nanna passed away.
So, I head to Sydney on Tuesday (all that long, long way from the Highlands!), to the ABC studio in Harris St and watch it all take place, which, no doubt will be quite surreal.

"How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Got a a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Got a, got a nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for three years? Huh? Got a, got a compelling protagonist? Yeah? Got a obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Got a story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? Yeah, talking about that three years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah? No, no, you deserve some time off."I leave it as an exercise for you to figure out where its from. When you do, you should watch the whole series. It may cheer you up. Or at least give us something to discuss when you visit.

Well done on the interest you have managed to get in your work. Obtaining a grant is no easy feat.
